River Race – Friday 6th April 2018
By popular request, we have arranged a friendly river race for those arriving early
for the Broadland Regatta. This will give competitors the opportunity to enjoy a
sail in their Squibs on the River Waveney. The river winds its way from Beccles
to Gt Yarmouth, through lowland marsh, typical of Broadland scenery, with lots of
wild life to observe. We plan to race from Oulton Broad to the Waveney Inn at
Burgh St Peter, where we will stop for lunch. This will be followed be an informal
free sail back to the Broad.
Start – We will start at Waveney and Oulton Broad Yacht Club at 11.30am with a
briefing at the Clubhouse at 10.45am.
Finish – This will be set up across the river Waveney from a dory or committee
boat, moored at the Waveney River Centre, Burgh St Peter.
Course – This will be determined on the day, to suit the prevailing weather
conditions. However, our plan at this stage is to start from the club house line or
committee boat, followed by a short course around club marks on the broad. The
fleet will then sail down Oulton Dyke and continue into the river Waveney.
Depending upon the tide and wind conditions a turning mark will be positioned
downstream towards St Olaves. The fleet will then sail back upstream towards
Beccles, finishing at the Waveney Inn, Burgh St Peter for a late lunch.
HW – Oulton Dyke 4.30pm
Lunch – Moorings are available over lunch at the Waveney River Centre. Meals
will be pre-ordered. Please select items from the Waveney Inn menu the day
before, confirming your request to Bryan and Jenny Riley on the day. The menu can be downloaded HERE.
Competitors are responsible for settling their own accounts before leaving.
Evening – There will be an informal gathering from 7.30pm at the Broadlands
Holiday Village. The bar and restaurant will be open.
